The Lucky One

Lucky One

I am one of the lucky ones. I grew up in a family where my opinions mattered. Even though sometimes I felt like my parents didn’t listen to me, my voice was heard. My decisions and wishes were respected.

I am one of the lucky ones. I got to attend a school where I was surrounded by creative people who cared more about the people we were than our academic accomplishments. Even though I sometimes felt like what they were teaching was not enough, I now realize that they prepared me for life.

I am one of the lucky ones. I found love. The kind of love that many only dream about. The kind that allows one to be who they want to be. A love that doesn’t take but always gives. A person I can always count on, in the true sense of the word. I found the person that gives meaning to everything I do, someone who shines through my darkest moments.

I am one of the lucky ones. I have never had to struggle to get my parents to understand me. I was never publicly shamed in school. I got to go home from happy that there is another day tomorrow that I can spend in school with my friends and teachers.

I was never disregarded, hurt or shamed by the one I loved. And now I get to go home to the person I can never get tired of. Ever.
